A Depthmap is a key feature to control the generative process of images or videos. The depthmap itself often comes as simple greyscale graphics where brightness indicates the nearness to the observer. Brighter tones are nearer to the observer, darker ones further away. The palette of depth induced generative processes is continuously unfolding with new models and improving open source workflows. This article offers a small design related collection of older and newer tools.

Z-Image Controlnet

The Z-Image Controlnet workflow is a pretty straightforward solution for good depth understanding and good prompt understanding and some elements to tinker with. Z-Image itself runs on consumer GPU, is pretty fast and a good allrounder.

FLUX KREA & DEPTH CONTROLNET

FLux Krea is a specific Flux I based model, that was trained on more lively, realistic and plausible visual content than the basic Flux I model. With ControlNet Union we can control this model with proper depth maps. The model is more expensive than Z-Image but has its qualities in realistic artistic style.

VINTAGE SD 1.5 CONTROLNET

Stable Diffusion 1.5 & ControlNet is (was) the most popular depth aware workflow for consumer GPU. Today it is far away from the standard prompt understanding and image quality of modern models – but it is still worth to keep an eye on it due its sometimes wild and weird interpretatons and compositions. It can be used as a good starting point, for collage material or for sheer inspiration.
