The Swarm Spline Designer is an experimental software prototype that applies autonomous, bio-inspired swarm intelligence to body-centric design. By using the computational rules that govern bird flocks or fish schools, the tool translates dynamic collective behavior into structural forms. It explores how self-organizing systems can generate novel aesthetics for experimental fashion while optimizing functional paths, material density, and structural reinforcement directly across the body surface.

The user begins by drawing freeform splines directly on or around a 3D body surface. These curves serve as the origin points and directional guides for hundreds of digital „boids“—autonomous agents programmed with classic flocking behaviors like alignment, cohesion, and separation. As the boids launch from the splines and navigate the contours of the body, their trajectories leave behind spatial trails. These motion paths are automatically converted into wearable 3D geometry, transforming invisible behavioral vectors into tangible, complex structures that can be exported for further modeling or digital fabrication.

Part of a Broader Exploration
Like its companion tools in this research series, this prototype investigates how generative, computer-aided systems can expand the boundaries of ideation and computational construction. Rather than relying on rigid, pre-determined shapes, the tool positioning algorithm-driven emergence as an active partner in the design process.

In line with an open-access philosophy, the system’s codebase is fully open-source, developed using advanced agentic coding workflows and accompanied by comprehensive documentation to encourage open experimentation and community iteration.
